With the controls on aspect resources decreasing chemical infection, new environmental demanding situations linked to nonpoint assets have emerged. To properly take care of those new difficulties, EPA's place of work of analysis and improvement famous the necessity to strengthen an total less than status of the of our ecological assets, the traits of their situation, and the stressors affecting those platforms on a huge scale. towards this finish, the En vironmental tracking and evaluation software (EMAP) was once proven by way of EPA and has been strategically constructing the medical instruments and methods to watch and verify the prestige and developments of aquatic ecosystems. EMAP scientists have constructed new symptoms and probability-based de indicators to fill information gaps within the improvement of regional-scale exams of our aquatic assets, as required within the fresh Water Act. we've got a scientifically de fensible strategy that enables: 100% assurance of the aquatic assets inside wide geographic parts and the formula of reference 'conditions for es tablishing the healthiness of those assets. using those symptoms and designs have been effectively established within the landscapes, streams, and estuaries of the mid-Atlantic states as a part of the Mid-Atlantic built-in evaluation (MAlA).

Landscape statistics for the entire basin and for each subwatershed are given in Tables I and 11. The landscape change statistics are shown in Table Ill. The forest fragmentation statistic was calculated for 1972 as 88% and 1991-92 as 84%. These are relatively high values which indicate that much of the forest area in the Tensas River Basin is interconnected. 8 Largest Patch (ha) Table 11 Tensas River Basin Forest Landscapes Statistics from 1991-92. 6 57279 Table I 1972 Tensas River Basin Forest Landscape Statistics from 1972.

The monitoring and assessment program staff are developing a representative watershed monitoring strategy, which includes bioassessments to create more balanced watershed assessments. Staff are also developing assessment criteria and a "weight of evidence" approach in order to include bioassessments in the next State's water quality assessment report due in the year 2000. 2 CALIFORNIA Presently the Central Valley, Central Coast, San Diego and the North Coast Regional Boards have on-going bioassessment programs to develop regional IBIs using the California Stream Bioassessment Procedure.
